Greetings from Downeast where the chill from Canada isn’t coming from brisk maritime winds. According to Calais shop owners, Canadian neighbors are giving them the cold shoulder following 25 percent U.S. tariffs slapped on some Canadian goods, including automobiles. A new raft of tariffs announced this week largely spares Canada — for now. Some residents downeast plan to protest the tariffs at rallies today.

Although lobster is exempt from the tariffs, that doesn’t mean the industry won’t take a hit. The Island Institute hosted a web event this week with industry leaders and policy experts who say consumers are likely to forego the luxury food as they deal with the probable sticker shock from virtually everything else.

But there is one bit of unexpected good news Downeast. About a dozen new volunteer firefighters rushed to the rescue after retiring Machiasport Fire Chief Dave Nielsen made a desperate plea for new fire department members. Volunteers have been difficult to recruit. Three recent fires in nearby towns, which consumed three homes and a pumper truck, underscored the need.

“There's so much energy and enthusiasm in the ranks, it's a wonderful thing to see,”
said Sarah Craighead Dedmon, Machias town manager. “We're fortunate to have multiple thriving Washington County fire departments who render mutual aid for one another.”
