Greetings from Downeast where the advent of spring is overshadowed as the community continues to mourn the loss of another Washington County fisherman, 26-year-old Jaxson Marston of Addison, who died from injuries suffered while dragging for scallops off the coast of Massachusetts. Another fisherman onboard suffered serious injuries. 


It was only a little more than three months ago when two other Downeast scallop fishermen were lost at sea.


The region’s tumultuous seas have claimed more than 100 lives between 1900 and 2023, according to the Bangor Daily News. 


This time of year, wildfires are also all too common along the densely forested portions of the coast, as well as statewide: according to the Maine Forest Service, there have been more than 200 brush fires reported. Many fire departments are modernizing and building new fire houses to better combat wildfires and structural fires, including one in Orland you can read about below.
