The Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial Bridge connecting Lubec and Campobello Island is a lifeline for area residents. Officials on both sides of the border agree something has to be done to either repair or replace the international crossing; this week, our reporter covered what the cost, safety and environmental impact might look like for the project, which may not start construction until 2032.

Thanks to the Maine Memory Network, the story is accompanied by images taken during the dedication of the bridge in 1962, including one of James Roosevelt, who attended the ceremony and cut the ribbon on behalf of his mother, Eleanor Roosevelt, who was also present.

We also have a story about a significant step forward in the permitting process for an underwater data center being proposed in Eastport. It comes days before residents there are scheduled to take up two citizen-led petitions to adopt ordinances that would ban the $100 million project.

We’re also following the Maine Library Commission’s ongoing work to draft new standards for public libraries that commissioners say are designed to make our libraries more sustainable. Some aspects of that work have been challenged by supporters of small libraries who have petitioned the commission to consider alternative rules.

All of the stories published by Monitor Local are written by community reporters, and we’re eager to train more people to cover local civic news in their hometowns.

This is the last call to participate in our next training session, in partnership with Journalism New England, in September. For more information about the program and application process, click here. It’s free and requires no travel, and you get paid for your time.

If you’re interested in freelance work but aren’t interested in this training opportunity, please reach out to me at judy@themainemonitor.org. I’d love to hear from you.

Enjoy the weekend, and please share this newsletter with family members and friends. They can sign up on our website to have it delivered to their own inbox each Saturday.
