Greetings from downeast where, despite some merciful rainfall, water is still in short supply, even for our Grand Manan Island neighbors across Fundy Bay. Wells drying up on the mainland is bad enough, but, for islanders, the poet’s refrain, “Water, water, everywhere, nor any drop to drink” is neither poetic, nor amusing.
Folks are making do by borrowing water from neighbors, rather than the proverbial cup of sugar, and tankers of donated water are helping out islanders. But wells can’t be replenished without a thorough soaking before winter.
The change in seasons is bringing out wildlife in greater numbers, with social media reporting sightings of a cougar downeast. Moose are also on the prowl, causing at least one moose and car collision in Crawford. Two non-animal related accidents caused serious injuries this week in Northfield and Hancock.
So be careful out there as you make your way to activities around the region.
Lots of voters are making the trip to the Washington County budget hearings ahead of the November bond referendum. The hue and cry over the county’s fiscal mess appears to have the budget advisory committee trying to soften the blow with promises not to spend the entire $11 million if the bond is approved. We shall see — on both counts.
The next budget advisory committee meeting is Wednesday, October 22 at 9 a.m., at the Machias Town Office. A zoom link is available on the county’s website.
