Voting in the primary is long over, but we’re still waiting for some key races to be called under Maine’s ranked choice voting process. You can keep track of where it all stands on our election results page.
As we also turn our eyes to the general, everyone is watching the race between Republican U.S. Sen. Susan Collins and Democratic challenger Graham Platner. Thanks to Maine Monitor reporter Josh Keefe, who spent days looking over Federal Election Commission filings, you can see who’s throwing money into the mix. It turns out nearly 100 billionaires and their spouses have donated to support Collins’ reelection. Read their names here. Platner? He’s pulling in many smaller-dollar donations, with a significant chunk from Maine.
If you’re curious about what ever happened to the plan to put up wind turbines in Aroostook County, reporter Delger Erdenesanaa has an update. Maine, which is working with four other New England states, is set to soon select winning projects for renewable energy development up north.
Reporter Daniel O’Connor was all about education this week, with a piece showing how voters approved all but one of the proposed school budgets that had referendums, including in Augusta, where voters passed a school budget that will force steep cuts to services.
Reporter Sean Scott took a look at how Catholic Charities is facing additional pressure to help feed people in Aroostook County, which produces some of Maine’s iconic crops but where nearly one in five people rely on food stamps to eat each month.
And please give a warm welcome to all six of our new reporting interns and fellows!
